In the recent Spring 2017 issue of Ascent magazine, the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) unveiled its 55th annual design award winning projects. According to the PCI, the Design Award Program was created to recognize “design excellence and construction quality using precast concrete.”
Mercy Health West Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, is one of this year’s winning entries and is a striking example of the possibilities of insulated precast panels. According to PCI’s award brief:
The façade of the building was inspired by Ohio’s tradition of pottery production… It is clad with a thin-brick veneer in a series of radiused wall panels and spandrels that were then embellished with thousands of tiles in 12 shades of blue and green in 19 different shapes laid out in pixel pattern.
The result is a dazzling, yet durable facility that “showcases the high-performance attributes of precast concrete in a variety of ways.”
