For its December 2016 online archives, Architectural Record takes a look at a striking, Thermomass-insulated concrete home near Toronto’s city center, designed by architect Angela Tsementzis.
Concrete was selected for the project because of its natural aesthetic, but also for its durability and potential for vertical and horizontal application. Thermomass insulation was used, in part, to reduce the number of steps required to complete the finished walls.
With the concrete left exposed on both sides,[Thermomass products] allowed the exterior cladding, insulation, vapor barrier, structure, and interior wall finishes to be completed in a single casting.
The final result is safe and serene building envelope surrounding an open floor plan that offers a number of beautiful views of the nearby ravine.
